Dauphin Island, AL -- Week #1

We made it to Dauphin Island, AL on Saturday March 28th after a long drive from Torreya State Park near Chattahoochee, FL. You may remember some of these pictures from our 'blog' last year - it hasn't changed at all in a year.

Coming in across the long 3-mile bridge.

The water tank at the T-intersection.

We had reserved and got the same campsite that we had last year.

Our campsite backs up to the Audubon Bird Sanctuary and we have a trail (that LaVerne made last year that goes right into the sanctuary from our campsite. There are also several birding sites around the island that you may remember from last year.

I guess we can't seem to get the timing right -- last year we were too late and this year it looks like we're a little too early. So far, we're just not seeing that many birds. I did manage to get a good picture of a Black & White Warbler, and we also saw a couple of Eastern King Birds.

Out near the airport is a platform someone built for the Ospreys, and they have made use of it. In this picture, you can see the chick's head -- he's almost ready to leave the nest.

There's lots of wooded areas to look for the birds and trails with interesting trees. LaVerne is holding this one up!

I'm always a sucker for the old cars -- here's a vintage VW we have seen several times with a matching surfboard!

We are only halfway thru our week here - hopefully the migration will get going and a lot more birds will be coming in over the next few days. More later ---------
