Dauphin Island, AL - Week #1 (Part 2)

We have had a great week here in Dauphin Island. The birds have not been as plentiful as we'd have liked, but we're thinking we're still a little early. We're going to High Island, TX tomorrow, be there for a week, and then back here for another week. Maybe by then things will have picked up a bunch.

Since the last post on Wednesday, we have seen a few birds that I was able to get some decent pictures of. On Thursday we saw a Palm Warbler and an Orchard Oriole (probably need to click the picture to get a better image).

Friday we took a day off from the birding and went to Mobile to meet some family for lunch. My brother Ariel and his wife Gloria were down visiting at their daughter's in Daphne, AL and I have a first cousin William and his wife Karen who live in Pensacola. We all met at Ed's Seafood Shed on the old causeway (now called Battlship Pky) coming in to Mobile from the north. We had a great visit and lunch.

From L to R - Karen & William, David & LaVerne, Gloria &Ariel.

Afterwards we made a Walmart stop in Tillman's Corner - the most crowded we'd seen for awhile. But, what did we expect on a Good Friday afternoon before Easter Sunday.

Saturday was another day of birding off & on. We went to all the usual places and saw a Northern Waterthrush and several Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. We also saw a pair of Mottled Ducks by a pond.

We saw an interesting Marine Patrol boat. One of the birding sites is next door to the Marine Patrol station on the bay and they keep their boats docked here. This one looks like a simple skiff underneath, but has a wraparound pontoon, a single pilot's deck, and has two 250hp Mercury motors on it. I wish I could have got a picture from the rear. I bet this thing can really fly across the water.

Sunday we attended Easter Sunday worship service at Dauphin Island Baptist church. Two Sunday's in a row - folks are wondering if we're going to be regulars. They had a very good service today. They have a small, but very good choir that did an outstanding job on a short Easter cantata.

Later we got in a little more birding in the afternoon before we started packing it up. We'll be pulling out of here early tomorrow -- got a loooong drive across Louisiana.
